Summer in excerpts
Email to fellow bridesmaids:
I don’t have a dress picked out yet but there are about 10 dresses waiting for me at my parents’ house when I get there in early August. I’m going with coral.
Excited for the wedding & looking forward to seeing you all! Xx
Letter to relative:
Things are going well for us. No news really but life is good and we’re staying busy with work. We are counting down the days until we go on vacation. 12 days! We are going to Virginia first to see mom and dad (Lisa will be coming from CA for a few days too) and then Scott and I are driving up to Maine for my friend’s wedding. We’re going to stop along the way–Rhode Island, Cape Cod, Boston and New Hampshire. Really looking forward to it! London has been having a heatwave and while it’s nice to actually get a tan in England, it’s been terrible without air conditioning!
Email blast to family and friends:
In honor of our parents turning 60 this summer, we’d like to surprise them with a special nod to the past 60 years–in the form of filling 60 envelopes with memories. Who better to do this than their friends, family, colleagues and neighbors?!
Please take a few minutes to send a memory of our parents or just a note of best wishes. There are no guidelines. Please write whatever you like.
You can send this via email. We’ll print it out and put it in an envelope.
We really appreciate you taking the time to do this. Our parents will love it! Please send a memory by 31 July.
Email to a friend of my parents:
We plan to give these notes to them on Thursday when Lisa arrives. We are having a family reunion with my mom’s side of the family so it provided the perfect excuse to also have everyone together to celebrate my parents’ birthdays, albeit a bit early. But with us girls being in three different timezones, planning and organizing this has been tricky! I’ll be glad when it’s over (I mean that in the nicest way possible.) My dad, as I’m sure you can imagine, is not reading into anything, but my mom is starting to get suspicious!
Email to the bride:
It’s been great to be home but very busy trying to get things done before the family comes in for the reunion and before the surprise party for my parents. Can’t remember if I told you…for the past two months we have been collecting notes/memories from friends/family/coworkers for their 60th birthdays. We are going to surprise them with 60 envelopes each of notes and then tell them about the surprise party. I have my bridesmaid dress and it’s at the seamstress being tailored. I will send a pic! How’s the weather up there? It is gorgeous here…sunny and in the 70s and low humidity. Unheard of in August! Xxx
Gchat conversation about the menu for the party:
Caitlin: Pomegranate martini sounds good!
Amanda: Or the Mojito. I’m already trying to decide what drink route I take: cocktails, mixed or what. Decisions, decisions!
Caitlin: This is the bad part about organizing! We don’t get to pig out.
Amanda: I wonder if we can take leftovers…
Email to cousins:
Just a reminder not to mention the surprise party on Friday night or the memories thing. I have already tripped up a couple of times (think I recovered gracefully though) and we are THISCLOSE to it being a success. I’m just paranoid someone is going to say something!
Text to friend:
I just spent the last five hours stuffing envelopes with memories for my parents. So tired. Never want to go to Kinko’s ever again. Also, I don’t think they are called Kinko’s anymore??
Email to family friend:
Great to see you guys on Friday. I know my parents really enjoyed seeing you and it was wonderful to catch up! It will take them awhile to get over the surprise! Thank you so much for making the effort to be here for it. Means so much to my sisters and me.
Email to friend:
We didn’t do anything in RI…it took forever to get there with traffic in NY…just got to the hotel, ate dinner and crashed. We did Cape Cod today and the weather was shit for most of the day. It did brighten up a bit and we walked along the beach…but then it rained again when we went out for dinner. They say the rest of the week will be beautiful though!

From England to New England! — Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Postcard to uncle:
You were right — New England is full of French Canadians!
Email to coworker:
The surprise party was last weekend (huge success) and the wedding is this weekend…so we’re off to Maine tomorrow morning. I am sitting in our room at a Residence Inn in NH, with fake tan on, trying not to make any sudden movements.

Well, it’s official #backtoreality
Email to friend:
Our trip was so fun. The wedding was amazing…like a Pinterest explosion. It was so fun to be there with all our friends from England too. My bridesmaid dress worked out fine…the only bad thing was that I had to make my own strapless bra the morning of. I cut the straps off of my favorite bra. So upsetting! The bra worked pretty well until about 9 pm when the underwire was all, I CAN’T BE EXPECTED TO DO EVERYTHING and threatened to give up all together. Thankfully I had a cardigan in case the situation turned ugly.
But that’s all a distant memory. I’m back at work now. Sob!
